Policy on the Use of AI in Scientific Writing

Updated: October  27, 2023

On March 22, 2023, a new policy was implemented in response to the increasing utilization of such tools by content creators. The primary objective of this policy is to enhance transparency and provide guidance to all those involved in the creation process, including authors, editors, reviewers, readers, and contributors. The publisher will monitor the trend and make changes to the policy as needed. It is important to note that this policy only pertains to the writing process and not the use of AI tools for data analysis during research.

When utilizing generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, authors should only use them to enhance the language and readability of their work. It is crucial for humans to supervise and regulate the use of these tools, and authors should meticulously review and edit the resulting output. Ultimately, it is the author's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and quality of their work.

To disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, authors must add a statement to the end of their manuscript under a new section called "Declaration of use of AI in the writing process," before the References list.

Statement: The author(s) used [NAME TOOL/SERVICE] during the preparation of this work to [REASON]. After utilizing the tool/service, the author(s) thoroughly reviewed and edited the content as necessary and assumed full responsibility for the publication's content.

This declaration will be required for published articles starting from Vol 9(2) March-April 2023.

It is worth noting that this policy doesn't apply to basic tools like grammar and spelling checkers. If there is nothing to disclose, state “nothing to disclose”.

Furthermore, it is not acceptable for authors to list AI and AI-assisted technologies as co-authors or reference them as authors. Being an author involves responsibilities and obligations that only humans can fulfill. Each author or co-author is accountable for preserving the accuracy and integrity of their work, and they must approve the final version and agree to its submission. Additionally, authors must ensure that their work is original, that they meet the criteria for authorship, and that it does not violate the rights of any third parties.

Is this policy applicable to artificial intelligence and AI-assisted tools utilized in research, like data processing, for instance?

No, this policy pertains to generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, like Large Language Models, when they are employed in the process of scientific writing. This policy does not prohibit the use of AI and AI-assisted tools in the formal design or methods of research. We acknowledge that this practice is prevalent in numerous fields. When AI or AI-assisted tools are employed in this capacity, they should be delineated as a component of the research methodology, and comprehensive information should be provided in the Methods section.
